Class demo

Some of my students were asking me about a rub-out technique and I ended up doing a little demo. These were done on a 1 3/4 strip of illustration board that I pulled out of the garbage. I did a very quick sketch, then I covered it with some acrylic gel medium. I tried to leave some strong brush strokes for texture. Once that dried I did a heavy wash of gouache, using warms into cools, over the whole thing. Then, with a wet paintbrush, I would lift out the highlights. I added some color and some darks back into them and did a little more lifting out of paint. Done. It is a very quick process, but it has some neat results. The girl was done in a more traditional way with gouache. See guys, it's not that hard. Now get crackin'!

Thanks for the demo. I spend more time lifting the watercolour off mine than I do putting it on!

I, too, teach art and have fully enjoyed your work for some time now. The "lifting" techniques are quite effective, and I prefer them over the traditional approaches. Graphite wash is amazing, but with high schoolers, we leave out the toxic solvents. Just know that we in PA are enjoying your stuff!

These are very cool painting techniques!! Love the different effects and styles ... thanks for sharing these!! Neato, have to try that someday ... I haven't done seriously paintings with traditional medium for a long time now. There are textures and looks that very charming on paper, which computer doesn't have.

Ciao Viviana

Wonderful stuff, thanks! Hard to believe this was done as a quick demo.
I have to admit though, I couldn't exactly imagine how the steps you wrote about would look. I wonder if we can get you to sometime post a series of images showing the process?

thanks for sharing the technique! I notice you used gouache and not watercolor or acrylic wash. Is that because gouche is still water soluable after it dries, or could you get a similar effect with another medium?

Again, thanks for being so generous with your talent and knowledge ;)

I don't remember any cool demos when you taught my class. If there had been one, maybe I'd be able to paint now. Just kidding. Actually you were quite an inspiration to me when I was a student because you were the only one doing fun, stylized stuff. And it looks like you still are. I'm glad I finally found your blog. You're still amazing!

This is one of my favorite techniques too! You should do a demo using the oil paints next. The results look a little more darker! Nice art blog!
